Friends and neighbors, On behalf of Rebuild Foundation, we wish you a happy new year. This year, we are excited to build upon the momentum of 2022, strengthening our commitment to supporting creatives of color, cultivating spaces of artistic inquiry and exploration, and demonstrating the value of Black spaces and archives. This year marks the 100th year anniversary of the Stony Island Bank's presence in Greater Grand Crossing. This architectural landmark, first conceived by William Gibbons Uffendell in 1923, is a testament to the Black cultural wealth that continues to live in Black neighborhoods. In honor of the 100th year, we are excited to embark on a new chapter of artistic interventions that center our collections. Home to four archives, including the Johnson Publishing Library, the Frankie Knuckles Collection, the Glass Lantern Slides, and the Ed J. Williams Collection, as well as the Tamir Rice Memorial Gazebo, the Arts Bank will platform and reimagine the collections by converting the atrium into an archival salon that will host workshops, research and public dialogue. Thanks to the generous investment by the Mellon Foundation, we will formally catalogue our artifacts, interrogate the collections with our Mellon Archives Innovation Fellows, and collaborate with artists and scholars to host programs reflecting on our repository of Black objects. With these ongoing processes, the second floor of the Bank will be closed for the year, but we look forward to bringing key articles to the first floor for public discovery and engagement. We are deeply grateful to our community of artists, academics, organizers, curators, creative entrepreneurs, and donors for your unwavering support. We look forward to sharing more and can't wait to welcome you back. With Gratitude, Theaster Gates
