Vice and Horror: PABLO PRADA’s Demonic Paintings
@pabloiprada
“I usually start my paintings automatically, letting myself be carried away by shapes and colours until something "arises" that interests me. The themes of my paintings are usually taken out of my day-to-day, the movies or series that I watch, the music that I listen to, the books that I read...” - Pablo Prada
Pablo Iglesias Prada is a Spanish artist, based in Asturias, Spain who has spent the last 15 years in the art industry, forging a blood-curdling dark and sinister world. Like the stereotypical child from horror films possessed to scrawl their demonic visions in crayon—to the dismay of their teachers—Pablo Prada has a gift for marrying innocence and darkness. Horned one-eyed demons and devil-like figures leer out from his images; painting in impressionistic brushstrokes. His imagery often touches upon themes of illness, loneliness and fear.
His imagery has drawn influence from extreme music over the years, in particular the hardcore punk and heavy metal scenes. He has cited creators like Pushead—a graphic artist best known for his album covers and merchandising for bands in the punk and heavy metal genres—for helping form his visual style.
In recent years Prada has become involved in numerous subcultures, lending his sinister imagery to projects including music album covers and skateboard decks. As a young child, Prada was a skateboarder and as such, the music and the aesthetics have always been appealing to him. On numerous occasions, he has submitted his work to Creature Skateboards, a skating brand known for its heavy metal and horror aesthetics.
