Well, it’s good to be on the podium. . This event is something I look forward to every year. I know, I know.. competitive fly fishing? It’s not for everyone, I get that. But when it comes down to it, every good angler is competitive. Whether you’re competing against the wit of the fish or competitive with yourself and your own abilities, we all go through a bit of competition every time we’re on the water. I may not show it on the outside, but I’ve always been highly competitive. Mostly with myself.. From soccer to snowboarding and now fly fishing, I’ve always wanted to push that edge of perfection. This event scratches the old itch of snowboarding competitions, just a little warmer and less intense. One's ability to perform under pressure is earned and never easy. . The Two Fly Extreme is the main fly fishing event of the Mountain Games in Vail, CO. Two casting qualifying rounds focus on distance and accuracy, followed by a final round of fishing from the boat. I love that it requires a roundedness of the angler to be able to throw a good line and also put your ‘fishy’ side to work. The fishing day for me always comes down to the fly selection. You only get six flies total, and you can only select two different patterns. There's a lot to consider. The river jumped up a bit the night before, making it a game-time decision for me at the boat ramp. . My favorite part about this weekend is that it’s become an annual tradition for several great anglers. I always look forward to seeing old faces and meeting new ones. Competitive fly fishing may seem like an oxymoron, but believe me, we are all out here having a damn good time. Well done to both the ladies and gents this weekend. Great to see everyone.
