Nearly eight years ago Carwan Gallery was displaying the vibrant and colourful ‘Landscape Series’, today I am very exited to present ‘Achromia’ a second drastically different work from architect and designer India Mahdavi. @indiamahdavi
The idea behind ‘Achromia’ was to push the boundaries of India’s work to another level of abstraction. Our first approach to this new concept came during our journey in Egypt during the the pandemic: we explored temples and archeological sites reflecting on her work, her past creations and what could be interesting to explore in the context of a first exhibition in Greece.
This new project is a link between India’s work and the erasure of colour from classical art and architecture. The challenge I gave to India was to reinvent her most iconic objects and translate them into an art history ‘contemporary error’ by entirely removing colour from them. Mahdavi’s virtuosity with colour can sometimes dominate her way with forms and shapes: in ‘Achromia’ we wanted to reveal the formal qualities in her work — an exercise that I almost imposed on her over a whole year of negotiations and pushing her towards a completely new avenue of experimentation.
As a natural result, the intervention on the objects designed for this series followed naturally the idea of capturing light — as in the way the grooves on a doric column catch the light — emphasising new textures and sculptural details.
The series of objects is composed of all redesigned signature pieces by India over the past two decades, all carved in Pentelic marble this time: a material chosen by sculptors and architects throughout history for its excellent quality and its white colour that has a golden sheen when hit by sunlight. Each object is handmade in Greece, combining advanced digital technology and craftsmanship at Delta Marmara workshops.
‘Achromia’ is displaying in Greece until tonight at @carwangallery and this fall will move to Paris at Mahdavi’s space in rue Las Cases from September 10th to October 29th 2022.
Looking back at all adventures that have shaped this project I want to thank India for a unique journey, I really enjoyed every single step of it!
