In the books, Jaime regrets Aerys' torture of Rhaella, Aerys' hunger for fire and his actions as a result, his failure to keep his promise to Rhaegar, and the death of Elia and their children. For years, he was called the kingslayer both behind his back and to his face. If Rhaegar had lived, there would have been a rebellion against Aerys, and Jaime would probably have sided with this rebellion... Things could have been very different, but they turned upside down in an instant. Jaime was called dishonorable by everyone because he saved many people by making a decision that no one could easily make.
