media is part of the problem that perpetuates the doom and gloom narrative... what you will never find in #COP27 headlines are the miraculous feats of the human will that show up day in and day out to fight for us all. As the wrap-up headlines read one direction, I am left remembering the people I met: -Fatou who traveled from Gambia with her 6-week old baby to the conference to show negotiators who’s life is on the line -the Marshall Island representative who arrived in Egypt 3 weeks prior to COP to start negotiations as his home is already partially submerged -Alexander, the climate scientist who set aside a year to ride his bike 6,000km from his hometown in the Netherlands to Egypt to attend the conference -the indigenous leaders who shared abundantly their love, knowledge, and rituals with ease and grace amidst the tension -the climate youth advocate that picked up two extra jobs to finance her COP travels so her island could be represented We are all indebted and in gratitude to the people who leave their families and jobs to come to COP on behalf of their communities. They completely pause their life for weeks to be there in person. For most this is not their full time jobs, they do not have platforms or are traveling on a corporate budget. This wasn’t a choice for them— this was the only option compared to the 600+ fossil fuel representatives who treats this more like a game.
