Following the World Boxing Council’s announcement last August that it would bar trans boxers from competing against cisgender opponents in its events, the organization clarified in December that it plans to create a separate league or tournament altogether for trans fighters. But being shuffled off into a corner isn’t what Patricio “Cacahuate” Manuel, the first out trans man to compete in a professional boxing match in the U.S., had in mind.
“Disappointment is an understatement,” Manuel wrote on Instagram Sunday, calling the WBC’s plan “inherently dehumanizing” by insisting that trans people are not their lived genders.
