"Less, but better" has its roots in industrial design, but Dieter Rams's adage also sums up our whole skincare philosophy pretty succinctly. We like a tightly edited collection, because shedding the nonessential frees you up to focus on what matters. Skin doesn't need much to thrive—it's already an incredible bit of natural engineering. The less we mess with success, the better! People have a tendency towards solution-orientation. We see a problem and want to tackle it head-on. Feel too oily? Better ramp up your cleansing routine. Feeling too dry from over-cleansing? Slather on moisturizer. Skin feeling congested from over-moisturizing? Add an acne treatment to the mix. All too often, our impulse to act results in skin that's over-cleansed, over-exfoliated, and over-burdened with too much stuff. The answer usually isn't piling on more products—just give your skin the opportunity to self-correct. Our skin is remarkably efficient at creating its own inherent moisture and protective barrier, thanks to millions of sudoriferous and sebaceous glands producing the perfect ratio of sweat and oil in our acid mantle. We naturally shed old skin cells to reveal plump, new skin. Our skin heals, regenerates, and generally functions pretty well all on its own! Of course, our skin can't do everything on its own; it still needs cleansing, gentle exfoliation to aid the natural cell turnover process, and (most importantly) sun protection. Targeted treatments to address specific skin concerns are accessories to the ensemble, not the main event. It’s all about supporting skin’s innate function. And for the most part, consistent use of a basic routine is all you need—so long as that basic routine is carefully considered, high-quality, and tailored to YOUR individual needs. Like we said: less, but better!
