The Maharaja, the Nationalist
Maharaja Sayajirao III, the ruler of one of pre independence India’s largest and most prosperous princely state - Baroda, was in vision and intent a Nationalist. Although he knew his dream of a united India could only be realised at the cost of dissolving over 500 individual princely states, including his own, Sayajirao was determined in his patriotic belief.
As the British crown breathed down his neck, suspecting and surveying his every move, Sayajirao continued to discreetly lend support to Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Dadabhai Naorojee, Madan Mohan Malviya and Mahatma Gandhi. Maharaja Sayajirao III was equally sympathetic towards the revolutionaries and supported them both morally and financially in India and abroad. In addition he closely watched and aided nationalists such as Yogi Aurobindo Ghosh, Prof. Manik Rao and Barrister Keshavrao Deshpande, Khasherao Jadhav by absorbing them in the service of Baroda state. These people went on to play a pivotal role in the revolutionary activities in Baroda state and India.
On this proud and momentous occasion of Republic day of India, we salute the late Maharaja Sayajirao III Gaekwad of Baroda and his contribution on the fruition of every Indian’s dream - Freedom and Self Governance.
