Celebrating Vermont’s Native American history along the Winooski River 🍂 One of the most comprehensive Abenaki exhibits in Vermont is hiding in plain sight at the Ethan Allen Homestead in Burlington. This Native American Heritage Month, we’re so grateful to @ethanallen_vt for bringing ALL of Vermont’s history to life! We recently checked out the outdoor Abenaki museum called Negôni Alnôbaakik, a recreated Abenaki village and ceremonial ground, as well as the Negôni Alnôbaakik exhibit, which sheds light on how Native Americans passed down their rich culture in the privacy of their homes for hundreds of years. 🌽 Abenaki tribes lived along the Winooski River long before colonial days. There’s archeological evidence from around 1400 that Abenaki people cleared trees by the river and planted corn. We have these tribes to thank for the name “Winooski”, who named the river after the wild onions growing along its banks. Home to Revolutionary hero Ethan Allen from 1787 until his death in 1789, the Ethan Allen Homestead also features the restored Allen House and a recreated colonial garden. It’s so fascinating to learn about the different ways Vermonters lived in the 1700s, from tee-pees to cabins! ⭐️ Although the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum is closed until May, the Ethan Allen Homestead Park is open from sunrise to sunset and offers free access to over 4 miles of riverside trails. We visited a few weeks ago when there was still some color in the trees, but this land is just as beautiful with a light dusting of snow! Time to grab those snowshoes 😉 💚 Native American history is Vermont history 💚 #vermont #vermontforreal #vermontbyvermonters #vermontlife #vermontshots #vermonting #igvermont #ilovermont #travelvermont #vermontfoliage #vermontfall #vermonthistory #ignewengland #mynewengland #abenaki #nativeamericanheritagemonth
