At the start of a recent Spanish lesson I overheard two of the Muslim boys saying “Salaam aleikum” to each other, to which I said “Aleikum salaam, did I say it right?”, to which one of them said “yes!” and the other said “Shalom! That’s how you say it in Jewish isn’t it?”, to which I said “yes that’s how you say it in Hebrew”, to which he said “oh yes, in Hebrew, shalom!”. Then I said, “In fact, you can say Shalom Aleichem”, to which the other boy said “Shalom Aleichem, Salaam Aleikum, woah that’s crazy, they’re really similar, that’s so cool!”, to which I said “yeah it’s cool isn’t it, there’s loads of similarities”. And then we did some Spanish 😊
