Looking at Charlie Phillips extraordinary photo work ‘Notting Hill in the Sixties’ in honour of Carnival. With writing by Mike Phillips, together the two artists create a portrait of a time and place - it’s joys, struggles, pains and idiosyncrasies. Filled with sharp suits and party dresses, it also doesn’t shy away from the racism and social issues plaguing the neighbourhood at the time. The final pages show images from carnival, a rebellious and political act, a community led reclamation of the streets after the racially motivated murder of resident Kelso Cochrane. Mike Phillips interweaves interviews with those he grew up with as well as his own prose to capture the minutiae of life in Notting Hill. Part of the RP Collection.
