I find it hard to get excited about sustainable collections as the term is not marked by clear parameters and limitations, however I am excited @mango is investing in hemp materials. Since the war on drugs propaganda and bans tarnished its name, here are my favorite things about hemp. 1. There are currently no known pests for the plant in the US and 1kg of hemp requires 3x less water. While converting conventional cotton to organic cotton has numerous benefits [(conventional cotton consumes 16% of the world’s pesticides and 24% of the world’s insecticides (Habermann 2021)] research shows that the current demands for garments can be satisfied with 1⁄3 of the land cotton uses to produce the same amount of hemp fiber + zero $$$ for pest control. 2. During a period of growing anxieties in regards to climate change, soil health is of utmost importance. Currently top soil is diminishing at an alarming rate globally due to unsustainable agricultural practices (Pastor 2021). Hemp can act as an incredibly potent rehabilitator for soil (Adesina et. al., 2020; Pudelko, Kolodziej, Mankowski 2021). It is a pioneering plant that can restore even mine-soil without hyperaccumulating heavy metals such as Cu, Fe, or Zn. At the same time important macroelements such as phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and manganese can reach optimal conditions for agricultural soil during a five year cultivation period of hemp, which suggests hemp may be particularly beneficial in farms using crop rotation or in nutrient deficient soils.
