Late last year, a tweet sharing what seemed to be Polaroids of Black women at a heavy metal concert in the ’90s racked up nearly 80,000 likes. But these weren’t real women, and this wasn’t a real event – each image was generated by MMA fighter Fallon Fox using an AI app. Real or not, they offer a different perspective on a scene that has often been overwhelmingly white and male, allowing viewers who may have felt excluded from such spaces to better imagine themselves within it.
It also reminds us of the many real Black women who’ve made their mark in rock, including Tina Turner, Bam Bam frontwoman Tina Bell, and Skunk Anansie singer Skin, as well as new voices including Alli Logout of no-wave punk band Special Interest, and punk feminist band Big Joanie. It’s fun to reimagine the past, but it’s more powerful to celebrate those who have fought for recognition in the present.
