It is Sea Ice Day! For many around the world, sea ice might seem quite foreign, but I assure you we feel it’s presence daily. In its freeze and thaw it dictates so much of the north, and because oceans knows no borders the changes in temperature and salinity affects currents and nutrient flows around the world. Which not only affects atmospheric climate and weather but also wild fish stocks and their migration. On top of that sea ice is our natural defence against a warming planet, its shiny surface reflects a lot of the suns heat and light energy back into space. It is like our planets air conditioner, keeping us cool with its albedo effect. In its absence, a dark ocean absorbs the suns energy, perpetuating more melting and warming.
