15 years ago my Chilean sister tried to migrate to Sweden where her father lived with his new family (us). My dad and her had been separated in the war that made him flee to Europe as a political refugee. She was refused help as she was over 18 years old and Chile no longer is a dangerous place in a humanitarian crisis. We had help from a friends mother who had worked as an asylum lawyer for decades and was renowned in Sweden for her work. On the day of our appointment my dad walked in and both her and him stared at each other, cried and hugged. She was the same asylum lawyer who had helped him become a Swedish citizen all of those years ago giving an end to so many years on the run. She said “I remember each and every person that I have known and helped”
It must be countless of thousands of people over at least four decades.
I always thought one day I want to be like her. This spring I applied to law school just to see if I could get in.
And I did -
From Monday I’m going to see if I have what it takes to be just like her
Here’s to never growing up, never stop learning and always being too curious not to try
