In honor of AANHPI month we’ve asked our identifying cast members what being Asian means to them. Here’s what Kevin, from our own Disney Theatrical office had to say: “The theater community is something I've always been a part of - from drama classes as a kid to playwriting in high school and now content creation + filmmaking in my early career, it's constantly intertwined with who I am and identify with. Being Vietnamese thankfully has never been an external issue with any of these endeavors for me in the creative field, personally, but acknowledgment is a large aspect of activism and I realize that not everyone has had the same experience. Early on, I had discouragement from family to go into entertainment for the sole reason of my race. They thought so after watching years of media downplaying Asian roles in theater and cinema. But in the last handful of years we've seen an exponential growth in the way minority stories are told all around and I am so excited to witness it firsthand while also starting my own creative journey. Disney Theatrical is a space where I know the very fabric of the whole is interwoven with people of incredibly different backgrounds, race, and culture. I'm really happy to be a part of this next generation of theater where exciting barriers are being pushed every day to make way for stories from everyone who is a part of the community."
