When we look at how far we are in achieving a fully inclusive society whereby people like me are treated as valued members of society and our individual needs are met so that we can enjoy and live our lives freely without discrimination, we have to acknowledge that deep rooted and often unconscious biases the disabled people face day in day out. I hope by now many of you that follow me understand the term ableism? if not I have a post a little further down explaining what ableism and Disablism is if in doubt head over to @scopecharity for more on the subject. But in order to really challenge and see any cultural shift that stamps out disability discrimination we need to recognise and admit that there is enabled or non-disabled privilege and what that looks like in everyday scenarios. I stumbled across a website on this subject and felt compelled to share because one sentence thumped me in my chest “Abled, enabled or non-disabled privilege refers unearned benefits that societies & cultures afford to non-disabled people” Exactly this! Who the hell decides and dictates who should benefit more in society purely on the basis of an abstract concept of ‘normal’? #TheDailyRenke #DisabilityEducation #DisabilityAwareness #AbelPrivilege #EnabledPrivilege #DisabilityDiscrimination #AbleIsm #DisableIsm #CheckYourPrivilege #Unlearn #NeverTooLateToUnloadAndRelarn #UnconsciousBias #BeADisabilityAlly
