“The New Bard (Ph.D.)” It was my great pleasure last Sunday to announce the newly minted Dr. Alexis Bard Johnson at Stanford. Lexi completed a beautifully researched, politically important, and altogether original dissertation on art in lesbian magazines from “The Ladder” (1950s) to “LTTR” (2000s). Lexi was my first Ph.D. student at Stanford and her intellectual generosity, love of discovery, and steadfast support of her fellow students (not to mention her advisor) have shown me the best of what academic life can be. I thank Lexi for being my student—and my teacher and look forward to her great success in the future. I was also delighted to witness the graduation of two wonderful scholars with whom I have worked closely: Yinshi Lerman-Tan, who wrote a revelatory Ph.D thesis on the (unjustly) under-known 19th century painter John F. Peto, and Sean O’Hanlan who has worked on the prodigious collection of art, artifacts, and specimens (10,000 works!) of the Surrealist poet Andre Breton. Thanks to Lexi, Yinshi, and Sean (three brilliant art historians) for creating new knowledge in the world.
