Having worked in the UK corporate world for over 10 years (and counting), here are 5 lessons I have learnt, especially as a black woman. Save this post and share it with your corporate girlfriends. 1: Network with purpose- networking isn’t just about business cards and events—it’s about building genuine connections. Take the time to understand people’s stories and interests; it can open unexpected doors. 2. Office culture- Navigating office culture goes beyond your skills and abilities. Embrace the unspoken norms, like the importance of tea breaks, the quirky days in the office, the weird chin wags online and in corridors and even the casual Fridays. These subtle nuances contribute to fitting into the corporate fabric. Don't stand out for the wrong reasons. 3. Guard your brand jealously - Your brand isn’t just about what you wear and how you look—it’s how you carry yourself. Confidence, authenticity, and a positive attitude can leave a lasting impression and set you apart in the competitive corporate landscape. 4. Diversity burnout - Diversity and inclusion can be buzzwords for some (let's be honest), but active participation matters. Be an advocate for inclusivity, and don’t shy away from sharing your unique perspective—it adds tremendous value to the workplace. The caveat is that you don't lean into the stereotypes because you are fed up or frustrated. 5. Be hungry for knowledge - Continuous learning is your secret weapon. The corporate landscape evolves rapidly, so staying adaptable and up-to-date with industry trends positions you as an invaluable asset. Share your learning journey to inspire others to invest in their growth, too. Be seen as a giver, not a taker. That was quite a serious post, wasn't it?
