#TBT to 1920 when the columns were near the intersection of King and Pierce Lanes in the Quad. πΈ
In 1911, Edmond S. Meany, the head of the history department, and his colleague Herbert T. Condon named the four columns Loyalty, Industry, Faith and Efficiency, or βLIFE.β ποΈ
Within a decade, the Quad expanded with the addition of Raitt Hall, Savery Hall and Miller Hall. The four Greek columns seemed out of place surrounded by the Gothic architecture. So, in 1921, the columns were relocated to their new home in Sylvan Grove. Prospective students and families can come see these columns during their campus tours!
