My Teen-of-a-Thousand-Talents is learning graphic art. The assignment was to create a pie chart. This is her interpretation of a pie chart breaking down facets of depression. With her permission I present ‘Illustrating Depression’ by G. Knost. Not a day goes by that I don’t learn from my children. The insights they have about the world, about life, about others, about themselves are fascinating and enlightening, sometimes hilarious and sometimes utterly heartbreaking. Listening; practicing sitting with them in their big, uncomfortable emotions; accepting sometimes hard-to-hear things; being their safe place, no judgements, no conditions; letting them struggle and make mistakes and fail and try and try again while always being there supporting them and ready to help when they’re ready to ask for help; providing guidance and guardrails quietly and kindly when and where they’re needed; letting them be as human as humans can be; and being honest and real in my own humanness. These are the building blocks of a mutually respectful and trusting relationship I build and rebuild with my children from their earliest years. The blocks tumble and fall and are rebuilt and redesigned again and again throughout their childhood as they stumble and grow and change...and as I do the same. We learn about life together as we live life together. We have too many challenges to list, but we make life work.
