đź’•Breakups can be tough. And the holidays can make them even rougher, so here are a few strategies to help get over an ex:
.
1. Unfollow them on social media (enlist a friend’s support & commit to a week of unfollowing to begin with). And if you can’t bring yourself to unfollow, use the “hide” and “mute” buttons so it doesn’t feel as though they’re hanging out in your pocket or purse ready to reappear at any moment. Out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind, but the urge to check in and read into every post can be emotionally exhausting. Give yourself a break.
.
2. Go ahead and dwell on the breakup for a bit. Instead of pretending to be happy and upbeat right away, give the negative emotions a bit of space. One study found that “dwelling” on a breakup can help you to get over it, so go ahead and feel sad, hurt, mad, lonely, rejected and/or regretful for a little while. You may want to write down how you’re feeling and over time you’re likely to find that the painful feelings will lessen.
.
3. Embrace negative reappraisal by considering the less positive aspects of your ex. Reflect upon or jot down their annoying habits or off-putting traits. Research suggests that doing so can decrease feelings of love. *However*, it can also negatively affect your mood, so consider offsetting this with positive distractions & activities.
.
4. Ask for support. Whether you want company, love, a wild night out, a lazy weekend in, or kind words, reach out to the ones who lift you up.
.
5. Focus on your own growth by considering your own role in the breakup. We have a tendency to lay blame on our exes, but it can also help to take stock of what you did well in the relationship and what you might have done differently. And what better way to get over a breakup than to invest in yourself?
.
No matter what you’re feeling, you deserve love and happiness. Share this with a friend who deserves the same!💕
