Bunny, by Mona Awad, is matcha boba tea, saltwater taffy, and pink champagne cupcakes topped with marzipan rabbit heads. Bunny? Is that you? The bunnies are huddled together, heads crooked, tips of sugar-crusted ears touching. As if transmitting stories soundlessly to one another. As if not four separate bunnies, but one collective, assembled whole. Their energy mesmerizes you. All at once they look up at you with unblinking, black pitless eyes. Twitching pink noses. Their mouths tremble with such fervor that a green liquid spills down their perfect chins and back into their glasses. They sip and slurp and suck the drink back down again. They bob for tapioca pearls at the bottom of their cups. Come sit, Bunny. There is power in those words. Drawing you in with smiles of twisted sugar; thick saltwater taffy dripping from their gums. Bubble gum swirl and blue cotton candy and pink lemonade hang in thick, gooey strands like neon fangs. Bunny? Please, won’t you try? Just one bite— for me? And me? And me? Their phosphorescent faces glow above a shining platter of pink champagne cupcakes. Each swathed in whirls of thick, rosy buttercream. Wrapped up in saccharine shells. A marzipan rabbit head is stuck to the top and these eyes watch you, too. The bite is a shiver of rich royalty. The champagne cake is sweet decadence, light as cotton as it crumbles in your mouth. The smooth, pelt like cream spreads across your velvet tongue like a pool of melted fur. But you’ve saved the best for last. Your Darling. The marzipan rabbit head hops across your lips, your mouth, your throat. Sweet, sugary almond. Slightly nutty. We are bunnies eating bunnies.
