Hello everyone. @vincentlions here. For the second day of my take over, I thought it would be fun to share with you the behind the scenes of the Pirate Ship photograph I took a while ago. Swipe left to see the different steps, from concept to the final image! 1) First I sketched the idea. My kids had this toy pirate ship that I thought would be so great to photograph. I wanted to create a fun and dreamy image, having the ship sailing on a splash of water. 2) the detail that brings things to life is the seagulls flying around the boat. But the ship wasn’t very big, so the seagulls had to be tiny!!! I drew them on illustrator, printed the outline on regular paper, then cut them out with an Xacto knife. 3) A little bit of marker on the tip of the wings, beak, and legs, to make them look more real. 4) Seagulls are glued to fishing lines placed all around the boat. 5) I don’t have a photo of the studio settings, but it basically goes like this: - Boat and paper birds are hanging with fishing lines from an arm placed above. - There is one light with a snoot on the boat, a second light for the background. Background light is actually pointing upwards onto a silver sheet placed overhead, bouncing on the blue seamless to create the light rays. - Water is thrown from a bowl under the boat, and captured perfectly while in movement thanks to the leaf shutter & studio light fast sync speed. - Camera settings are: ISO 100, 1/1000s, f/5.6, 80mm lens. I used a timer on the camera, and triggered it using Capture Pilot on my phone. 6) I did a few attempts to capture the splash I wanted, I then reviewed and edited the selected shots in Capture One Pro. 7) I work with 2 monitors. Main one is a calibrated Eizo monitor. I never work with a mouse, I always use a graphic tablet for retouching. All fishing lines are removed in Photoshop. I also flipped the flags towards the right direction: a classic mistake is to draw (or glue, in this case) the flag on the mast in the opposite direction of the wind! ;) 8} Et voilà. This is the final image. I hope you enjoyed!
