Here’s a quickie tech tip Tuesday. I’m a firm believer in using the real thing whenever possible. This example illustrates a life cast technique for creating a dummy head with the eyes open. And yes I know you can sculpt eyes open on a clay pour from a closed eye cast. But this technique gives you very accurate placement of the lid folds and details of the under eye area not available in a closed eye cast. Why not obtain as much real “information” from the actors cast as possible. We do our cast the usual way, 2 layers of body double standard first then fast but we leave right around the eyes open. Then the bandage pass and as the final step a fast batch of silicone is carefully brushed on the closed eyes down to the lashes, then we have the actor carefully open their eyes. At that point the silicone is brushed under the eyes up to the lower lashes. By the time this is done the silicone is gelling so they don’t need to stay open for too long. At this point we remove the cast as is. Body double holds its shape well so this area can closed up and be reinforced after the fact. To fill the missing eyeball area we use vacuform eye shells placed from the inside and carefully brushed over with silicone on the outside. Finally bandages are applied over the area. I’ve also found that most actors I’ve cast this way actually do quite well with the process. And it beats the old school way we did open eye casts back in the day 👀 but that’s for another post on another day. One note here is that we use 10 to 12% hyperfolic in any silicone batch touching the skin. #prosthetics #makeup #mua #makeupartist #sfx #specialmakeupeffects #makeupeffects #sfxprosthetics #makeuplife #prostheticmakeup #prostheticmakeupeffects #silicone #prostheticartist #art #artist #effects #moviemagic #bodydouble #smoothon #reynoldsadvancedmaterials
