In Issue 03, @_mariahernst profiles @otishopecarey in ‘We All Share That Water.’ If you haven’t heard of him already, Otis is an artist, professional freesurfer, and proud Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung man of the now Coffs Harbour region in Australia. He’s been changing freesurfing since the 2010s with his stylish and powerful approach, and he’s brought contemporary Indigenous art to the Australian national dialogue and beyond. His work contains traditional symbols and stories as a way to shift the unconscious and bring people together and into healing. Mariah started following his surfing and his voice over a decade ago while living in Bali, and it significantly inspired her own creative work. She spoke with him in April 2022, well after midnight his time, as he was painting in his studio.
