1 year ago today, one of my music idols @jeffbeckofficial passed away. His passing shocked me and the rest of the music world, prompting me to study his work for the entirety of 2023. I even went as far as to take a Jeff Beck Lab at Berklee that had me learning how to solo in the vein of the titular legend. After months of research, transcriptions, and practice, I’m still in awe at how much power Jeff Beck had in his hands alone, creating some of the most beautiful and unique melodies and tones that are, as Rick Beato put it, simply uncopyable. This video is me improvising over “Diamond Dust,” the final track on the Blow By Blow LP. Originally written by Bernie Holland, this orchestral fusion composition in 5/4 time features 16 extremely jazzy chord changes that I’m still coming to grips with soloing over. It’s incredible how Jeff managed to solo so perfectly on this back in the day, so much space given to make the technical mastery shine through. This is far from one of my best improvised solos, but I wanted to challenge myself with the song I listened to most last year. I’m very proud of my journey as a musician and I have Jeff Beck to thank for my growth. RIP to the greatest to ever wield 6 strings.
