I just went to the new Bill Cunningham documentary @bcunninghamcocumentary at the suggestion of my sweet neighbor @dhwendygoodman. Having seen the other one and having read the flurry of stories that followed his death, I wasn’t sure there was more to say, but boy was I wrong. I learned that a man who slept on a single mattress stacked on milk crates next to filing cabinets gave millions of dollars to AIDS charities. A man who chronicled the extremes of New York culture for over a half a century was as as excited to go to work in 2016 as he was in 1949. A man who eschewed fame and fortune never took so much as a glass of water at all the shows and events he covered. In a time when success is measured in dollars and followers it is good to be reminded of someone who embodied qualities that were once valued—hard work, humility, generosity and integrity. A great man.
