Photographs of @solangeknowles’s warm, light-filled home demonstrates a perspective & aesthetic thoroughly cultivated for over a decade. I need y’all to understand, this is her element. A simple feature the culmination of curiosity, persistence & resourcefulness—remixing forms no matter how disparate, patiently trying things out. It’s a soft power of learning through trial & error that’s been amazing to witness, esp when we aren’t afforded the time & space to do so. Our homes can be laboratories, too. Seeing this picture, specifically has my heart swoll. Since 2009, Solange has been one of my earliest supporters. Our first conversations were infectious & refreshing: geeking out over artists, designers, world-builders. She knew the potential & glory of our collective works as young creatives before the rest of us—before the market ever did. I drew this ballpoint polyptych as a love letter to her while back in AL, figuring out my career, inspired by her invitation to try. As it was then, so it is now: whatever happens is an evolving project towards creating our own resplendent ordinary. A true home for ourselves. Having these drawing on her walls years later brings it all to the fore—what an honor, what a ride!
