The mega-gallery David Zwirner has announced the exclusive representation of Gerhard Richter. Richter, who is one of the most celebrated—and most expensive—living artists, will have his first solo show with the gallery in New York in March of next year. The gallery has in fact presented the artist’s work before—albeit on the secondary market. In 2019, at Art Basel, Zwirner sold the large black-and-white canvas, Versammlung (1966) for $20m. Zwirner described the opportunity to now represent Richter as an “immense honour and great privilege”, while Richter—who worked with Zwirner’s father Rudolf in the 1960s—described it as a “beautiful continuity across generations”.
