My #WCW is my beautiful bossy best friend Mayra. I often say she was my FIRST best friend as she took me under her wing on my first day of high school when I was a naive newbie walking the halls of Park West Public high school dazed and confused. I had gone to catholic school all my life and being thrust into a NYC high school at 15 was culture shock. But Mayra had it covered! From getting us fake ID’s so we could sneak into The Copa at 15 to having sex first to prove to me you don’t immediately go straight to hell (yes my mother had put the fear of God in me!) Mayra was my badass bossy best friend who had it all together! Right before Thanksgiving she texted “I’m coming to spend Thanksgiving with you”. She didn’t ask - she just told me. She showed up with her tiny chihuahua Oliver who proceeded to take the tiniest shits all around my house. 💩 He was cute but annoying! I was exhausted from traveling and cooking all day but we spent the holiday together. Mayra went back home on 11/29 and on 11/30 was told there was nothing more to be done for her. On 12/9 we got the news that she had succumbed to #pancreaticcancer...The same cancer that took my brother. #FUCKCANCER We all have a #WCW #BFF in our lives.
