There's something a bit 🥴 about the takeover of body positivity by those existing in the most privileged bodies. It's been happening for years, I've been yelling about it on the internet for years, and it seems that with the Clock App taking off the way it has it's happening even more intensely.
Body positivity was never about 'feeling positive about your body'. It has roots in the fat acceptance movement, and was created in order to fight back against oppression faced by marginalised folks - especially those who are fat, Black, and/or are POC.
But we're still seeing folks contorting their bodies to create a fat roll for the likes/shares/brand collabs. And it works because people are more likely to listen to those with more palatable bodies.
If you mainly learn about body positivity from those who are thin/white/able-bodied, I implore you to go beyond. Think more critically. Unpack why hearing things from white folks sits more comfortably with you. Why you are "all for body positivity unless they're fat". Because body positivity was meant to make you uncomfortable - not be something you could buy or create a funky lil video to with kitschy lyrics.
