Recently got the photo documentation of my recent performance at @oyounberlin as a part of the @alliedfutures AUTOPOIESIS: Recognizing Kin Across Antipodal Topologies curated by @shaunakmbani . In my most recent iteration of Akin to the Hurricane (Iteration 08) for the Autopoesis exhibition opening I collaborated with producer and sound artist @____naemi EXAEL. Throughout my art practice I interrogate the impossible complex that exist within the hyper-visibility and invisibility of ‘people called Black’. While utilizing the aesthetics of Carnival this work generally takes on a satirical approach to undermine this impossible complex. The invisibility of the masquerade and the hyper-visibility of its spectacle allows for a necessary subversion to really de-materializes this dichotomy. Documenting this performance was quite difficult as the performance is only illuminated by a crescendo of strobe lights that climax towards the end. The revelation that the strobes enact, produce a still image from an otherwise nearly invisible performance. Working with @____naemi for this iteration felt quite instant and flowing, and with only about a couple days of meeting we were able to develop this iteration. I really commend the photographer Ceren Saner for being able to document this performance on film! So stunning. I’m really looking forward to seeing the digital/video documentation . I have two iterations of this performance coming up in very different spaces and I’m excited to be focusing on developing this work even further.
