Hugo Gonzalez is an Indigenous Latine activist and designer, whose work we learned about through @forgeprojectny open call for a digital storyteller. Hugo provides a collaborative research-based approach to every creative project, using history, cultural aesthetics, and socially conscious design. One of Hugo’s current projects is collaborating with the immigrants-rights nonprofit organization Touching Land and a shelter at the colonial U.S.–Mexico border that temporarily houses asylum seekers and refugees. Despite mainstream media representations of people crossing the southern border between the United States and Mexico, asylum seekers travel from all across the globe to enter the United States at this location, and speak a variety of languages and dialects. Therefore, relying on a singular written language is not effective. In these pictures, Hugo is testing the effectiveness of a visual language inspired by Indigenous visual storytelling that will serve as an alternative to written-language resource navigation. At the core of this project is fostering community beyond the restrictions of colonial borders and language barriers. The project is ongoing and the language and iconography are not finalized.
