This contemporary design was inspired by antique Chinese hand-painted papers made for export. Designed by the British firm Fromental, this scenic panel retains the assortment of flowering trees, bamboo, exotic birds, butterflies, and rock formations traditionally found on Chinese painted panels, but the use of hand embroidery and updated colors give the designs a more contemporary look. Chinese scenic papers are thought to have inspired the fashion for papered walls, when they were exported to Western markets beginning in the late seventeenth century, and have remained in demand for over three centuries.
