‘Surfing’s kind of been a pillar to express and understand myself. I’ve spent so much time in the ocean that I talk to the ocean, it talks back to me. It’s helped me and guided me significantly. Surfing’s so important to me and I need it. It’s just provided a space for me. I don’t know if I ever really felt like I belonged in the surf industry just because there were not really any other Black surfers and there wasn’t much promotion of our culture.
