What is Tinea versicolor? What causes this skin condition?
Tinea versicolor otherwise known as pityriasis versicolor is a benign condition caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Malassezia furfur on skin.
The yeast loves lipids. Reason why it commonly affects the face, chest, arms and backs where there are increased sebaceous glands.
Teens & young adults tend to be most affected as well as a result.
Humid weather exacerbates it. The hypopigmentation in tinea versicolor is due to the inhibition of tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production by M. furfur production of azelaic acid.
TREATMENT
Topical and oral antifungal meds that target the yeast involved such as : 👉🏾selenium sulfide shampoo 2.5%; 👉🏾topical azoles (eg, ketoconazole 1% -2% ); 👉🏾zinc pyrithione 2% or sulfur-salicylic shampoo 2% in creams and shampoo preparations left on skin especially during daily showers. For extensive disease, oral antifungal. Fluconazole 150 mg/week can also be prescribed.
