Northern Pakistan, mid-90s.
I love this picture, here's why: there are a lot of memories as a child (or an adult) that are easy to take for granted. When I was a kid, I lived in northern Pakistan for 9 years nestled in the heart of the Himalayan mountains. It was beautiful and dangerous all at the same time. But I was just a kid, incapable of fully grasping where I was and what that meant.
I remember visiting Kansas as a child once, and I was in awe at how much SKY I could see. "What a cool thing, to see a sunset and it takes up half your vision," I thought, and I meant it.
As I got older, I began to realize how special my childhood was. I lucked into it, my parents were the ones who did all the work there, but it still ought to be appreciated. Doesn't matter if it happened by luck or hard work. Good is good. Appreciate it.
There were hardships that I had to endure as a kid that a lot of people don't; conversely, I was spared from a lot of hardships that many have to suffer. BUT there's no doubt about it... northern Pakistan is indeed a unique part of the world. The people are amazing and the Himalayas are just incredible. I love this picture because it reminds me of that in literal bold text, right in my face (which is the kind of reminder I need these days). It makes me wonder what other unique parts of my life do I take for granted? And how can I appreciate them too?
And yeah I’m the one in the epic dinosaur shirt.
