Today the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, the landmark case that has protected the right to abortion in the US since 1973. This decision removes federal protection for abortions and gives states the right to ban or heavily restrict access. Thirteen states known as “trigger states” already have laws in place designed to take effect automatically or by quick state action with this Supreme Court ruling. That means that today and over the course of the next several weeks, abortion bans with very limited exceptions will take hold across the country. This news is devastating. The right to safe, accessible, and affordable reproductive healthcare is a human right and a ruling such as this one will impact historically underserved communities the most – especially Black, Latinx, Indigenous, low-income, LGBTQIA+ and disabled people. A moment like this can leave us feeling powerless, but now is a time for action.
