My self-directed production, Afros with Opulence, is officially on YouTube! Link in my bio. This production originally started out as composition for choreography and it’s something that I have wanted to pursue for almost two years now. So, to say that I am filled with joy by seeing it come to life would be a MAJOR understatement! The inspiration behind all of my work as a composer is to highlight the overlooked talent that lies within Black artists. Often times we as Black people are put into a box that our only way of being successful is through sports. When music is made as an exception then the only genres that we are generalized to achieve success in are strictly R&B and Hip-hop. This project gifted me the platform to collaborate with Black artists from multiple outlets such as music, dance, poetry, and visual art. As a result, this production became less about composing just for choreography and more about composing for US and showing opulence in culture and artistry. I am beyond grateful for every single person that has contributed to this production’s success in any way. Getting to work with so many talented artists over the past few months has been an experience I will NEVER forget.
