new work: OUT / SIDE OF TIME — commissioned by The MET (@metmuseum) as a part of their new exhibition: “BEFORE YESTERDAY WE COULD FLY.” this film honours the legacy of Seneca Village — the afore space that is current day central park nyc. a thriving 19th century settlement existing from 1825 - 1857 . this land, predominantly owned by black folk was taken by the city under eminent domain: a law that allows the government to take private land from a landowner for public use. ain’t that something wild ? this film honours what was, speculates what could have been, what is... and to be. a container space for our collective black imaginaries .. the sweetest kinds that exist outside of time + space — “a black imaginary repository” if u will ... special thanks to lead curator, the incomparable Hannah Beachler for the incredible honour of inviting me to contribute to this important show. i adore u. warmest thanks to the wider MET curatorial team — you all have been perfect collaborators. u made space + let me do my thing. its been such a beautiful journey: Ian Alteveer, Sarah Lawrence, Ana Mattise and Dr Michelle Commander — thankyou. show opens to the public tomorrow, Nov 5th 2021 and is ongoing. lastly, the most sugar filled thanks to my beautiful cast + crew who worked so hard on this and oozed their best all up and thru . big up u allllll 🙏🏾 full credits + @‘s in comments below.
