We wish the happiest of Arrival Day to a living legend, Sonny Rollins, who turns 92 today! Saxophonist, composer, 1983 NEA Jazz Master, 2010 National Medal of Arts recipient, and 2011 Kennedy Center Honoree, Sonny Rollins is easily on the short list of the music’s most important and influential artists. For over seven decades, Rollins has been a guiding light, shaping the history of the music and deeply influencing every jazz musician who has followed in his footsteps. He has led over 50 albums, including the classics “A Night at the Village Vanguard,” “Tenor Madness,” “Saxophone Colossus,” “The Bridge,” “Way Out West,” and “East Broadway Rundown,” and contributed a staggering number of standards to the jazz repertoire, such as “Airegin,” “Doxy,” “Oleo” and “St. Thomas.” From his sideman appearances with Bud Powell and Miles Davis in the early 1950s, through an incomparably fertile career as a bandleader to his present-day status as a national treasure, Sonny Rollins has maintained a standard of quality and artistic integrity unmatched in the jazz pantheon.
