While offshore, I often ask the people on my boat “which direction is home?” Often, people look to the sun to try and orient themselves, but here in the northern gulf, there’s a pretty interesting way to tell, and it’s usually easy to see. Because the land heats up more quickly than the water, during the day the air over land rises and expands from the suns heat, creating a weak thermal low pressure system. The cooler gulf air begins to flow into this low, causing the sea breeze you feel on the beach - that south wind that picks up. Here’s what’s cool- you can normally see those cumulus clouds over the land from a long way away. It’s a very distinct “wall” that stands out from other upper level clouds and can help with navigation. If you scroll across the pictures you can see where the clouds formed, above land, in an otherwise bluebird day. If conditions are right, they can usually grow and cause some rain just north of the bay- we’re lucky to have the “Destin dome” Check it out next time you’re offshore and let me know if you see it! #weather #boating #themoreyouknow #destin #30a #beach #florida #gulfofmexico
