This morning was a 10/10 but not every morning looks like this. I never know what the day will throw at me, but the one thing I do have control over is attempting to set myself up for presence and patience. I’m not a morning person at all so getting into a routine of wake and meditate and has taken me years. Here are my 3 tips to anyone out there trying to start a morning practice—
1. Start small- When I first started meditating, I’d set a timer for 2 minutes to just sit and breathe. From there I worked my way up. If you aim for 20 min daily off the bat, it might feel daunting to stick with it.
2. Consistent inclusion in routine — this is huge for me. I think of meditation as part of my personal hygiene routine. I wake up, brush teeth, wash face, drink hot lemon water, and then I sit. Clean my body, clean my brain. Including it as a daily non-negotiable part of my morning routine has helped me stay committed.
3. Go easy on yourself — there will be some (probably many) days where you wondering if you’re even meditating or if it’s doing anything. Still happens to mean after years of practice. Keep at it. Once you’re consistent, believe me you’ll notice that it’s working when you miss a day.
