Today we get loud for #LatinaEqualPay, the day we raise awareness about the absurd pay gap and how it disproportionally affects Latinas. Thanks to the work of advocates such as @activistmonicaramirez, co-chair of the Latina Equal Pay Day campaign, we know that Latinas with reported wages only earned .54 cents to the dollar a white, non-Hispanic man earned last year. This includes FT, PT and seasonal workers. We have the burden of one of the widest gaps. Native and Indigenous women's pay is 51 cents. It’s worse for Latina moms and immigrants: 46 cents! Let me put this into perspective, we would need to work until we are nearly 90 years old (eight years beyond our life expectancy!!) just to make the same amount that a white man earned by age 60, according to the National Women’s Law Center. This loss of potential income affects us all. What can we do? 💥 Keep raising awareness to advocate for yourself and your Amigas. Have the money and salary conversations. 💥 Advocate at the policy level. The Senate has yet to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. 💥 Understand that while we need to learn negotiation skills, the burden and blame is not on us.
