Flat rate hourly is not as straightforward as it seems. If you're a quick Stylist, it penalizes you. You could be doing 5 services in the same amount of time someone does 3 and get paid the same. Not every service has the value of other services and clients are willing to pay more per hour for certain services than others. Depending on the types of products you use, you may make considerably less on one service versus another, even if they take the same amount of time. Haircuts require no product while color corrections may need double the amount of product you would use in a traditional color. Many Stylists have actually seen a loss in income when going to hourly. While there are some who can price themselves high enough to still make more money, the cost of producing certain services will still leave money on the table with this method. This is why it is important to break your menu up unto categories based on the types of product being used. Then determine what the pricing strategy is for each category. To make this an easier process I developed my Modern Menu & Hybrid Pricing Blueprint after working with Independent Stylists and Salons as well as owning my own salons for the past 8 years. It makes pricing impactful and menus easy to navigate for clients especially when you opt for online booking.
