I'm delighted to announce the publication of "Master of the Two Left Feet: Morris Hirshfield Reconsidered." The book focuses on the life and work of a Jewish immigrant tailor, slipper-maker, and self-taught painter who, against all odds, achieved international recognition in the 1940s. His wildly stylized pictures of women, landscapes, and animals were embraced by Picasso, Mondrian, Peggy Guggenheim, and the Museum of Modern Art. Since Hirshfield's death in 1946, however, his work has been largely forgotten. "Master of the Two Left Feet" (and a related exhibition at the American Folk Art Museum opening in a few weeks in New York) seek to restore his art and life to visibility. Here's a picture of me moments after receiving the book in the mail, a detail of the end papers, some (cropped) images of pages from the book, and a snap of an impromptu celebration with dear friends Nancy Troy and Wim de Wit. #mitpress #folkart #americanfolkartmuseum #arthistory #jewishart #moma #sidneyjanis #americanart #immigrantartist
