Long subjected to racism and imperial conquest, Arabs should defend the rights of other people as much as they defend their own. Too many Arab societies have failed to consider how they treat the black community living among them. The Arab and Muslim community needs to think long and hard about this until we truly comprehend the humbling beauty of this solidarity between minorities. We have to take a stand for a community that is hurting and being torn apart. Upon opening our hearts and eyes we would see that black is profoundly beautiful and that Africa runs through our veins as well. Our enslaved African foremothers deserve to be honoured and loved by their Arab children. And it is for us to redeem their pain with the recognition and atonement long owed. Not enough people speak out when they see a person of colour being harassed, and it seems that even fewer bat an eyelid after one has been killed. It’s time more Arabs defend the rights of others as much as they defend their own. Racism is rampant in the region, and only solidarity, not denial, can beat it. Protest, donate, research, speak up, listen, and fight for black lives! No one is free when others are oppressed!
