Heartbroken about the attack on our community at #ClubQ in Colorado Springs. The brazen, hateful and widespread attacks on the drag community, gay and queer community, transgender, BIPOC, Asian, Middle Eastern and Jewish communities are becoming normalized in the same way that gun violence and mass shootings are in the US. Do not let them. Attacks on the LGBTQ community are a heterosexual and cisgender problem. They are NOT an LGBTQ problem. The toxic misinformation and rhetorical messaging from cisgender and heteronormative individuals, politicians and organizations directly leads to violence and is foundational in the hatred of people that are different from the heteronormative. If you think that the current state of the “conversation” regarding transgender people in sport is not directly connected to an attack like this, please wake up: By "othering” transgender people and thru politicians creating laws that BAN trans healthcare and BAN trans people from sport: transgender people are publicly assigned as: “not-normal, offensive and less than”; not deserving of the same basic human rights all cisgender people are afforded. When the LGBTQIA+ community can not even feel safe in our own spaces, how can we feel safe anywhere? There is a culture war being waged against the LGBTQIA community through politics which results in real violence. Attacks like these are about power and control and we won’t let those that hate us dictate our lives. Keep being visible, being out, being loud. Keep fighting and keep showing up.
